PokerStars Offices in Costa Rica Raided by Local Authorities

It’s been an intriguing week of news for online poker.
After the breaking news of Absolute Poker’s corporate offices being completely cleaned out and 95% of its staff being fired just the other day, new news about PokerStars has just broken about their very own corporate offices being raided earlier this morning by the OIJ (basically the Costa Rican version of the FBI everyone).
All employees were apparently sent home as local authorities were investigating possible fraudulent activity by PokerStars management in the wake of the news of AP/UB not being able to pay their own employees with severance packages that are required by Costa Rican law.
A source close to the situation had this to say about the raid (thank you Tao of Pauly):
“”The UB employees went to the “Ministry of Work” because they were afraid of not getting paid by (Paul Leggett).” So, I’m assuming that the OIJ raid is a result of that complaint.””
It doesn’t seem that Stars has broken any of the laws that Cereus and Blanca Gaming have recently in regards to their employees, but the OIJ is covering all bases to make sure no one is getting screwed over.
The only good news to really come out of this is that PokerStars doesn’t look to be in any real trouble; however, Costa Rican authorities are making sure that a similar situation that happened earlier in the week with Absolute/UB employees wasn’t going to happen to the employees from PokerStars.
