The World Series of Poker has been around for decades and many different types of people have won the main event. However the winner had never been from Canada, that is until just a few days ago. Jonathan Duhamel was able to win the 2010 World Series of Poker and since he is from Canada he became the first ever Canadian to be crowned the world champion.

The twenty three year old dropped out from the University of Montreal to play poker full time. He began playing the game of poker in his basement and worked hard to make it all the way to the main e3vent of the World Series of Poker.

Duhamel earned the title after he played fourth three hands against his opponent. Duhamel won $8.94 million dollars and the coveted WSOP bracelet once his ace and jack beat out his opponent’s king-eight. Duhamel commented that he is very happy right now. He stated:

“The first time I played it was for fun and my friend invited me to play. I learned quickly it became a passion.” Duhamel also commented that the key to winning is to remain calm. He stated: “The more you practice, the better you’re going to be. But you need to have both (skill and luck). It’s very important to keep your focus and not let your emotions get the best of you. It’s something you master when you play over and over again.”

Duhamel stated he doesn’t know what he is going to do with his winnings but he does know he is going to continue his career. He is planning on playing in the Caribbean in January. He did comment that he is going to give $100,000 to Montreal Canadians Children’s Foundation. After that, he will have to think about it!
