The U.S. Open will begin less then a week from today. The respected tennis tournament will be without last year’s men’s champion, Juan Del Potro. Del Potro will miss this event, the last major of the year, due to injury. The tournament’s women division will be without one of its biggest and most reliable stars, Serena Williams. The favorite going into the tournament, Williams has had to withdraw citing a foot injury. This is a big disappointment for tennis fans, considering that Serena has been on top of her game recently.

Serena’s sister, Venus, will have to hold the torch for the William’s family. She moves into the favorite spot. However, before you think Venus has it in the bag, consider this. She has had to pull out of two tennis tournaments, one in Cincinnati and the other in Montreal, due to a knee injury. The world’s former # 1 player Justine Henin will also be a no show at the U.S. Open. She has cleared her tennis playing schedule for the rest of the year as she recuperates from a ruptured elbow ligament, which occurred during the Wimbledon.
The surprise winner over Roger Federer in 2009, Del Potro hasn’t done much since. In fact, he hasn’t played since January, when he competed in the Australian Open. Because of that fact, he wasn’t ever a contender for this year’s U.S. Open. Juan Martin becomes only the third male to not defend his title in the Open’s entire 42 year history. The other two gentlemen were tennis great, Pete Sampras in 2003 and Ken Rosewall in 1971.
